DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


This position is responsible for the implementation and support of a variety Geographical Information System (GIS) projects and data needs within the DCR Bureau of Forestry and Fire Control (the Bureau). These may include but are not limited to digitizing, providing maps in a variety of formats, data analysis for reporting needs, interactive web application maps, and integration of various tracking systems. This position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team.


The Seasonal GIS Technician is responsible for carrying out the following statewide activities:


Specific Duties Include:

Working directly with Service Forestry Program Director, GIS Program Director and other staff to support a wide range of forestry project needs including map production, spatial and tabular analysis, and other support.
Coordinating the collection, processing, and dissemination of geospatial data for use in the Bureau.
Setting up and operating EDP (electronic data processing) equipment such as computers, ruggedized laptops, and tablets or other wireless devices, in order to enter updated information such as changes, additions and deletions into the system.
Utilizing ArcMap/ArcPro to update spatial databases.
Setting up, collecting, downloading, and post-processing GPS data from a wide range of sources, including ArcGIS Online.
Maintaining and updating the Forest Cutting Plan data layer, which primarily involves digitizing from paper maps.
Creating raster maps of Forest Stewardship priority areas for submission to the U.S. Forest Service based on Forest Service and Bureau criteria.
Working with ArcGIS Online to create and distribute maps through ArcCollector for field use.
With input from Bureau staff using ArcGIS Online products such as StoryMap for Bureau programs and initiatives.
Creating interactive maps for web use.
Exploring the potential of ArcGIS Online products such as AppStudio for use in applications for data submission from external partners.
Training Bureau staff in the use of GIS software.
Utilizing aerial photographs, other remote sensing media and field reconnaissance to prepare a variety of map products.
Preparing data for reports, analysis and presentations.
Utilizing the current versions of Microsoft Office and other software in the aforementioned activities including the preparation of correspondence, reports and other documents.
Determining the proper coding of data for entry into the computer system.
Checking for discrepancies between source documents and keyed data by visually checking items to determine the accuracy of the information and to ensure compliance with established standards and procedures.
